Waiting for Spring

Several years ago, we created raised garden beds from the old lumber from a tear down four years ago. We built the beds before we ever lived on the farm. I had no room to grow vegetables and herbs on our zero-lot-line property and we made a couple of beds to grow cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, sunflowers and attempts at Crenshaw melons. (I planted them took close to the cucumbers and ended up with something we loving called cucamelons. {check our Instragram for a picture of the green melon which was supposed to be yellow]) Time and the elements have caused/resulted in main failure in the bed walls and corners. It is time to rebuild!

Around Christmas, we worked on layout, design and size of the garden, along with a rebuild plan. We are going with local, rough-cut cedar, all 4’x12’x14”. We are going to start with the creation of three new beds, digging out all the good soil and perennials, asparagus, onions and strawberries, and transferring to the new beds. We have measured the parameter of the garden for a permanent fence solution. In previous years, we have pounded pickets and pulled fencing, then after first frost, we pulled the pickets up and rolled the wire.
